Call Me Pretty

March 2, 2010

I just married the love of my life at the end of 2009 and have since been evaluating my life.

Are you pretty?

Merriam-Webster defines “pretty” as: “having conventionally accepted elements of beauty”.

I’m not pretty.  I know it despite  people trying for years to convince me otherwise.  My darling husband has certainly tried the hardest to make me see myself as a pretty woman, but I simply cannot believe the man.  I know he is intelligent, a realist, and in possession of an up-to-date glasses prescription, but I doubt his words are true.  I’m sure he believes I am pretty, but I have too much evidence to the contrary to think of myself as any more attractive than plain.

Here is a bit of my evidence:

  • I have never been asked out on a date by someone who knew what I looked like.
  • Strangers barked at me (yes, you read that correctly) in three states and even international waters.
  • I have been overweight since childhood.
  • I am close friends with men and their significant others are not threatened by me.
  • I look in the mirror and am not impressed with what I see.

I know, I know.  I am being a tad ridiculous and those reasons are hardly solid evidence of unattractiveness.  Perhaps I have allowed people to slither into my life and bash my self-image into the negative form it takes now.  Maybe I’m completely wrong about how I look.  I just can not help how I feel about myself.  I am starting this blog as a way to increase general happiness by recognizing pretty things in life that are easily overlooked while trying to increase my prettiness from the inside out.  Khalil Gibran wrote “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.”  I hope to make my light shine in a way that will make other people see a glimmer of the beauty within.

Thanks for coming by my blog, I actually have the same picture (well a different one, but you catch my drift), on my blog too. Lol, I wonder if everyone who stops through Chamberlain snaps a pic of that sign? I voted in your poll.

Thanks for stopping my my brand spankin’ new blog Tammy! I think you’re right about everyone taking that same picture, I remember taking that picture the first time we went to the Hills for vacation and I’ve taken a new one every year since. I love your blog! I actually have dough rising right now so we can try the brisket pizza tonight (from October). Sounds delicious.
